Zakhaev's rise began after the Chernobyl disaster and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, where he leveraged wealth from nuclear proliferation to fuel his political agenda. His first major appearance in history occurred in 1996 when Price and MacMillan ambushed him in Pripyat. The assassination attempt failed to kill him but cost Zakhaev his left arm. Years later, in 2011, he leads the Ultranationalists during a Russian civil war while simultaneously supporting Khaled Al-Asad's coup in the Middle East. After Al-Asad is captured and executed by Price, Zakhaev retaliates directly. He seizes control of a nuclear launch facility in the Altai Mountains and launches intercontinental ballistic missiles toward the United States, intending to trigger World War III.

In Their Own Story

The conflict escalates when Price's team and Russian loyalists capture Zakhaev's son, Victor. Cornered by joint task forces, Victor commits suicide rather than surrender. In response, Zakhaev activates his plan at a nuclear facility in the Altai Mountains. The task force successfully retakes the site and destroys the missiles over the Atlantic Ocean. During their escape, Zakhaev's forces destroy a bridge, trapping Price, Soap MacTavish, Gaz, and others. Griggs is killed, and Zakhaev personally executes Gaz along with other wounded soldiers. Before he can eliminate the rest of the group, loyalist forces led by Kamarov arrive and destroy Zakhaev's aircraft. As the dust settles, Price slides a pistol to Soap MacTavish, who uses it to kill Zakhaev and his remaining escorts.

Reader's Guide

Zakhaev serves as the central villain driving the plot of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. His backstory is revealed through flashback missions in Pripyat and present-day events in Azerbaijan and the Altai Mountains. He is not a playable character but the target of the final mission, "Mile High Club" leads to his death. In the narrative structure, he represents the threat of nuclear escalation and personal vengeance against Captain Price. Players encounter him indirectly through his son Victor's suicide and directly during the climax where he executes allies before being killed by Soap MacTavish.
