The core of Black Ops 7's narrative revolves around Specter One's infiltration of Avalon, where they are ambushed in a laboratory and exposed to "the Cradle," a hallucinogenic toxin. This substance forces the team into vivid shared visions rooted in their past traumas. David Mason confronts an apparition of Raul Menendez in a vision of Nicaragua and later battles a plant-monster hallucination of his late mentor, Frank Woods, who reveals his guilt over accidentally killing David's father, Alex Mason. The psychological toll is compounded by the revelation that the Guild CEO, Emma Kagan, fabricated the Menendez video using deepfakes to justify her own power grab. The team also encounters spectral versions of their allies and enemies, including a cruel warden version of Alex Mason in Vorkuta, forcing David to reconcile with his family's legacy while fighting for survival.

In Their Own Story

Specter One's operation in Avalon begins with the recovery of a quantum computer drive before they destroy the lab, accidentally releasing "the Cradle" and contaminating the city. Guided by JSOC operative Chloe "Karma" Lynch, the team hunts an insider who reveals the toxin's name and the truth about the Menendez video. As they capture server farms to decrypt data, they are betrayed by Slade "Razor" Barrick, a double agent for the Guild who deletes critical information. The team captures Dr. Gideon Falkner, leading them to "the Sanctum," where Kagan ambushes them with Razor. After killing Razor and escaping hallucinations of Alex Mason, Specter One uncovers Kagan's plan to use the Cradle to terrorize the world while posing as heroes. They track shipments to an underwater manufacturing complex off Avalon's coast, destroying a bioreactor and capturing Kagan. However, in a final twist, her right-hand man Alden Dorne breaks Falkner out of containment near a coastal base.

Reader's Guide

Players experience the campaign either solo or in co-op with up to four friends as Specter One through 11 missions set in Avalon and its surroundings. The narrative is driven by investigating the "Cradle" toxin, which triggers hallucinations that serve as gameplay segments; players must survive these visions to progress. Key objectives include infiltrating labs, capturing server farms, confronting Dr. Falkner at the Sanctum, and destroying the underwater bioreactor. The campaign introduces new mechanics where players can equip major and minor abilities for their characters.
